Bakala Academy supports the Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality. The staff has an extensive experience in performance testing for disabled athletes. Bakala Academy is extensively involved in the preparation of Paralympic athletes for the Games. Specific designed testing equipment is present and adapted test protocols are used. Disabled customers can use their own wheelchair, (hand-) bike or wheeler in the testing procedures.
The exercise protocol is adapted to the disabilities of the athlete/customer. For instance, they perform an incremental exercise test either on a professional treadmill, or on a cycle ergometer. Depending on the selected exercise protocol, the test starts at a running speed of 6,5 km/h, or 60W and thereafter speed and power are increased by 1,5 km/h or 20W per 3 min. or per 8 min. until volitional maximum. Throughout the test micro blood samples are taken from the earlobe for determination of blood lactate concentration. In the final stage of the test respiratory gases are collected and analysed.
